I'm still working on this method for making full art cards. So far I'm really really happy with it. I'm still experimenting on cheaper cards before I do anything serious because I really want to prefect the process first. I learn a ton from each card. All the art I'm using I got from Legend of the Cryptids--that game is a treasure trove of high resolution art.

A lot of people ask my why I don't make more proxies. Well, I don't make them too often because I'm super obsessive about my cards and want everything to be perfect.

Here's an example of one of my proxies:

Looks good right? --Wrong! If you look closely at the text you can see that it's just not quite right. Check out this 1200x scan of this proxy next to a real magic card:
(Yes I spelled original wrong I'd fix it but I'm lazy)

As you can see the text looks a little bit blurry (Laser jet looks much worse so I don't even include it in comparison). This is the problem with my proxies--I just never figured out a way to reproduce the text quality of a real magic card. Even if I had an offset printing press I would still need to get the same plates that Wizzard's uses.

The image quality of inkjets, on the other hand, is much nicer than offset lithography.  Look at the bottom part of the border under the manna symbols. Inkjet doesn't have the dots that you see in offset printing.

Anyway, this is why I like making alternate art cards. You get amazing art and the same feel of a real card!
When Teriese Neilson posted her alternate art version of Hanna, Ship's Navigator I knew I had to have one. Oh wait... it doesn't exist!! Why don't you print this wizards!? Fortunately I can just alter my existing Hanna!

I've got a special treat for you today.

I've been working pretty hard on trying to find a way to make full art cards look even sweeter. When I came up with this method for blending the existing template into the art I wasn't sure it would work. When I printed my first test it blew my mind. Here's my first attempt:
I think there is a lot of room for improvement but as you can see in general the tech looks pretty sweet.
Here's my second attempt:

I love how I can play around with making the original template transparent! Stay tuned. I'm pretty excited to explore this style of full art and see what else I can come up with. I love this style because I can use the original text of the card. The truth is no commercial printers (laser jet or inkjet) can print text as well as offset lithography. Inkjet images are actually higher quality than offset lithography so here we get the best of both worlds! These are some stunning stunning cards.

I'm still trying to find the best font for full art cards with complex images for the background. Stephanie Mun Law is amazing though. I wish she would do actual card art.

Still continuing to experiment with full art. Here's another EDH staple:

I just released a new vid on how I make magic proxies with an inkjet printer! Check it out: INKJET Magic Card Proxy Secrets Revealed

Here's a Sylvan Ranger. I'm experimenting with different text for optimal clarity on full art cards.

Stephanie Pui-Mun Law is an awesome artist. I know this art doesn't really make sense for what the card does but man it looks cool:

Here's an old one I did experimenting with making the image pop off the card. The art probably would look better on a white card.

I hate the original confiscate art, but its a powerful card. The flavor text is still lame though -_-

This is a new piece for my Darien King of Kjeldor EDH deck. Its not that I really like this art, its more that I hated to original art and just wanted everything in my deck to have decent art. This card is such a sweet combo with Darien I didn't want to cut it so I gave it better art!

I'm really into Alan Lee art work. He's the guy who did the art for LOTR. I've decided to pimp out a lot of my pillow fort EDH deck with his art.

This is a full art with a foil border. It looks much nicer in person, the scans don't really do the card justice. The picture doesn't really make sense, but for some reason I felt like I wanted to put it on my Syphon Mind. Another staple for my EDH deck.

Here's a super sweet Terminate I did today. I'm really starting to love this style of full art card.
I also like the flavor of the image. I like the interpretation that Daemons are taking the guys soul hence can't regenerate. Too bad I don't have any black red EDH decks to put this in...

This is a tribute the the late great Quinton Hoover. This guy is easily one of my favorite MTG artists of all time. I've always wanted to buy his original Doppleganger art, but I was never able to find it. Oh well.
This is an Avacyen Restored Archangel that I've altered with Quinton's superior version. RIP.

Here's an Ice Age Brainstorm that I've changed the art to the Gen Con Vintage Champs Art.

Here's another recursion engine card for my mono black EDH deck. I always hated the origional art on Diabolic Servitude.

Wednesday, October 23, 2013

My first attempt at a foil. The art is not foil, but the rest of the card is.

Art from thiennh2 on deviant art. Amazing artist.

Here's a Skinrender I just finished for my Mikaeus the Unhallowed EDH deck. I'm really just getting started with making the images pop out of the frames so I wanted to test this on a less expensive card before I start doing more. Also, I realize the art is more of a demon and Skinrender is a zombie, but whatever -_- The art is by Liarath at deviantart.com

I love the nostalgia of magic. Many of my favorite alters are of older cards. I've always loved the ability of Al-abara's carpet but never like the original art. The art I chose here is by Viktor Vasnetsov and I think fits really well on an older ledgends card.
